Lifecycle stage

What this means for industry The project is real and dated. Prepare for market engagement.

The challenge

Short high-intensity rainfall now overwhelms the combined system in the lower city several times each year.

The project

Construction of retention capacity upstream of the historic centre, conversion of hard surfaces to infiltrating surfaces in four districts, and a real-time control layer linking retention basins to the rainfall radar feed. The nature-based components are being delivered under the same contract structure as the civil works to keep maintenance responsibility in one place.

Expected impact

  • Retention capacity sized to the current design storm
  • Reduced surface flooding events in the four target districts
  • Continuous rainfall and flow monitoring published as open data
